Teaching Philosophy
I firmly believe the classroom should be a safe place in which students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and concerns without threat of ridicule or embarrassment. My classroom is a place that encourages curiosity and explores challenging questions. I attempt to relate content to current events in politics, global affairs, and pop culture.
I aim to instill in students a love of learning and an appreciation for knowledge. I believe skills taught in history and social studies and skills taught in theatre can be applied to other subject areas as well as to life outside the classroom. The ability to think critically allows students to analyze sources and scripts, but also to examine and question news sources and people in positions of authority. This is not to say I aim to instill cynicism or skepticism in students, but rather to teach students to think for themselves and draw their own conclusions. With specific attention to history and social studies, I hope to provide students with an understanding of various cultures and societies while celebrating the cultures from which students come. I also hope to leave students with an understanding of their role as global citizens.
Part of my teaching philosophy is to allow students to explore their passions in my classroom in some form or another. This is realized by providing students with the option to choose their own medium in which to complete various assignments. Some students may thrive writing an essay while others need to create videos or other visual representations. Additionally, allowing students to select their own subtopic within a larger research assignment assures students are engaged with material.
